From a prison cell to 10 community gardens

Transcript:

While in prison, I met a friend who is a teacher. And he taught me about Thrive for Good East Africa.

His vegetable planting lesson really interested me. He taught us about planting quality vegetables using double digging.

Afterwards, we were taught how to harvest different types of vegetables. Learning about vegetables and organic pest control improved our health. We’re now using organic pest control and fewer chemicals on our crops.

Prison conditions took a heavy toll on my mental and physical health.

What motivated me to start this farming project was the teaching of Theophilus. He taught me how to generate fast earnings in a short time. This helps my family and my children to pay for their education. And also ensures better nutrition for our health.

I had a piece of land, and I still have it today. Before, I didn’t plant quality vegetables, but I do today. We used to eat porridge and potatoes, but lacked high-quality vegetables.

My family has benefited a lot since I started vegetable farming. There has been a great change in our health. My children don’t get sick easily.

With our vegetable earnings, we were able to buy a goat, that now produces milk. We get milk and make good tea, then share it with our neighbours. Our health has improved, and we don’t buy vegetables from the market anymore. I source seedlings nearby to provide for my neighbours.

This project has benefited our community. This project has helped us to be united. This project has changed us and given us a better life.

I want to thank Thrive for Good for helping me. After leaving prison, I started vegetable farming three years ago.

I was able to buy a goat from selling my vegetables. From that one goat, I have grown my herd to nine more. Later on a got a cow, which is about to give birth.

And now my life has changed. From the vegetables, to goat’s milk, I have truly benefited. It has allowed me to support my child’s education, who is now studying in grade ten.

Thrive for Good has really been helpful, and I’m proud to be a successful vegetable farmer.
